Mr. Shiv Vikram Khemka is Vice Chairman of SUN Group, a private investment group active in several transforming markets around the world, with particular focus on Russia and India. The Group is a leading principal and private equity investor across various industries including Oil and Gas, Mining, Real Estate, Infrastructure, Technology and Consumer Goods.
After heading up SUN’s Latin American activities in the 1980’s, Shiv has been leading SUN’s investment and entrepreneurial activities in Russia since 1990. Although SUN’s founders have been working with Russia since 1958, SUN made its first investment in Russia in 1992, by establishing SUN Brewing. Shiv led the consolidation of 13 breweries, financing, restructuring and growth of the beer company, followed by a joint venture with Interbrew to form SUN Interbrew, now part of InBev. In 1996 SUN established and led one of the first private equity funds in Russia, SUN Capital Partners. Sun Group is a member of the Russian Prime Minister’s Foreign Investment Advisory Council (FIAC).
In 2004, SUN has set up SUN Natural Resources, a vehicle to invest in the global energy and natural resources sector, and has made investments in several countries including Russia. SUN Asset Management is also a significant investor in emerging markets, through various investment vehicles working with leading global institutional investors. More recently, SUN has also signed a joint venture with Russia’s largest hydroelectric power producer, RusHydro, to jointly invest in the Indian power sector and in January 2007, SUN closed a $630 million real estate fund with Apollo in India (SUN-Apollo Indian Real Estate Fund).
Shiv was elected a ‘Global Leader for Tomorrow’ (GLT) at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 1997 and was invited to join the Forum’s ‘Foreign Business Leaders Council’ for Russia. Shiv serves on the EMEA Board of The Wharton School, on the Board of the Wharton Global Family Alliance and on the Board of Governors of The Lauder Institute, University of Pennsylvania. Shiv is also a member of the President’s Leadership Council at Brown University; a member of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) at the University of Pennsylvania and sits on the Advisory Board of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. As one of the founders and partners, Shiv also sits on the Council of Moscow School of Management “Skolkovo”. Shiv is a member of the Board of Eurasia Group in New York, a member of the International Advisory Council at the International Crisis Group (ICG), and a member of Young President’s Organisation. He leads the Russia Country Committee for the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in India. In 2006, Shiv was awarded the Wharton India Alumni Awards. He is also Chairman of the Aikido Akikai Foundation of India.
Shiv was educated at Eton College, received a B.A. from Brown University, an M.B.A. with distinction from The Wharton School and a Master’s in International Studies from The Lauder Institute, University of Pennsylvania.
Shiv is a Trustee of his family’s charitable trusts, the Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation and the Nabha Foundation. The Foundations endeavour to build innovative cross-sectoral collaborations and development infrastructure within India and internationally through strategic philanthrophy focusing on poverty reduction, empowerment of marginalized society and protecting the natural environment.
